Irén Virág: The education of Hungarian aristocracy in the first half of the 19th century: The testimony of sources

The aims of the present work are twofold. First, a definition of the concept of aristocracy as a social group is given from the aspect of social history, with a comparison of the groups distinguished within the aristocracy. Second, the private education of the sons of the aristocracy is outlined, along with its shortcomings. A thorough archival research complements the conclusions of the secondary sources reviewed. The European influences in 19th century Hungarian education are identified and the process through which these became objectives is revealed, primarily concentrating on German intellectual trends (Enlightenment, philantropy, neo-humanism). The criteria by which aristocratic families chose their tutors are also identified.
