Developing inductive reasoning in -early school years

The program draws on the definition of inductive reasoning by Klauer (1989) and his program entitled ’Denktraining für Kinder I’. By keeping its original structure, the program contains tasks for practising the fundamental operations of inductive reasoning – (universalization, differentiation, classification in many aspects, identification of connections, differentation of connections, producing systems) – between the ages of 6 to 8. The one-to-onedevelopmental process uses items, objects  and images suitable for students’ developmental level (e.g. building blocks, logic set, cards, matches, coloured pencils). Each base structure consists of 20 tasks, i.e. the developmetal program entails altogether 120 tasks. To complete the tasks first students need to manipulate objects, then gradually playful images and finally symbols are also introduced.

The inductive reasoning of pupils can be improved significantly between the ages of 6 to 8 regardless of  sex according to the results of the experimental and control group, pre- and post-assessment developmental experiments. During the eight-week long developmental program stundents’ inductive reasoning reached a level normally attainable in one year. The impact of the development is stable and permanent. As a second result of the experiment a system was constructed which develops the inductive reasoning of pupils in a playful way. The model can be applied in both individual and pair work, and also outside class, for example in day care.  As part of the program package we also devised a worksheet aiming at the assessment of non-verbal, figurative inductive reasoning, which can also be used for the assessment students’ developmental level of inductive reasoning in early school years independently from the developmental program package.

The computerized version of the program, which runs on personal computers as well as on mobile tools was developed and parametrized in 2010.
