Concept mapping as a tool for meaningful learning

Our main aim was to make a developmental program, which facilitates meaningful learning and the successful and efficient comprehension and acquisition of the given subject matter. The program emphasizes the interpretive processing of chosen facts of the subject matter. It focuses on detecting coherences, defining key-words and visualizing connections in a visual form by concept mapping.

The first stage of the program was conducted in the fourth and seventh grades in a variety of topics inHungarian grammar. Selected topics were for example: conjugation, indicative, imperative, conditional, pronouns (fourth grade), syntaxs, subject, predicate, objects (seventh grade). The development followed the same structure in both grades. In the control group at the beginning of the classes the students got a short text related to the subject matter. After reading it they depicted the information chosen from the text by concept mapping. Finally they discussed and checked the concept maps. The concept mapping tasks became more complex during the development. Results show that students were more successful in completing tasks where they had to complete the given concept map figures. However, they were less successful in drawing concept maps individually. Students’ achievement in pre- and post-assessment suggest that concept mapping can contribute to a better understanding of the basic concepts of the subject matter. The program was extended to other subjects in spring 2008. The developmental program was also carried out in grammar (grades 4 to 8), environmental studies (4th grade), physics, chemistry and biology (7th grade).
