Éva Szabolcs and Mária Réthy: Froebel and the women's movement in Hungary

The paper aims to reveal the connection between Froebel's work and women's associations in Hungary in the second half of the 19th century. Froebel was well-known in Hungary from the 1860s as a reformer of early childhood education. His work inspired - mainly aristocratic - women to establish associations in order to promote the dissemination of his ideas. The most famous and effective of these women's organizations was the Central Froebel Association of Women in Hungary established in 1869. It maintained several kindergarten teachers' training institute in the Hungarian capital. Not only did it contribute to institutional early childhood education, but it also provided women with a more active role in society. In a way, these women can be viewed as forerunners of the female educators of the New School movement.
