Marianne Nikolov: Code switching in pair- and groupwork tasks in primary-scho ol English classes

This paper examines how Hungarian children interact in English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms. Data collected in 111 observed classes are analysed to identify emerging patterns of peer-peer interaction. Issues of when, how, why and in what languages children exchanged information, applied for help and supported each other in 37 EFL classrooms are discussed and compared to sources representing various educational contexts reviewed in the first part of the paper. The question of how far willingness to interact in the target language is related to profiency and to age and peer pressure is explored in detail.
