Benő Csapó : LONGITUDINAL ASSESSMENTS IN SCHOOL CONTEXT – THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL FRAMES OF THE FIRST LARGE-SCALE SCHOOL-RELATED LONGITUDINAL PROGRAM IN HUNGARY

The Hungarian Educational Longitudinal Program (HELP) was launched in 2003 in three cohorts: with students who began the first (n=5286), the fifth (n=3881) and the ninth (n=3131) grades. The first four-year-long phase has been completed. The aims of this paper are to outline the general framework of longitudinal programs carried out in educational contexts and to introduce the specific characteristics of HELP. First the paper compares cross-sectional and longitudinal developmental studies, than summarizes the typical goals and methodological features of the large-scale longitudinal projects. In the second part, it reviews those European and American longitudinal projects that at least in part cover a school-aged population and study educational issues. The third part describes those – mostly cross-sectional – developmental studies carried at the University of Szeged that were predecessors of HELP. Then describes the main aims of HELP; characterizes the samples of the program; furthermore, introduces the waves and the instruments of data-collection. Finally, the first results of the analyses are summed up and the main goals of the next phase of the program are outlined.
