Benő Csapó : The Legacy of János Csengeri: The Magyar Pedagógia in the 21st Century

The paper is an extended version of the presentation held at the conference commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of János Csengeri, the founding editor of Magyar Pedagógia. The journal was established in 1892, and since its foundation it has been playing a leading role in advancing the educational sciences in Hungary. Today, it is the journal of the Educational Committee of Hungarian Academy of Sciences and publishes peer-reviewed research papers. This paper discusses the latest developments in editing and publishing scientific journals, identifies the major challenges and dilemmas of publishing social science research journals in a country where English is not an official language. The paper describes how Magyar Pedagógia adapts to international trends of editing and publishing scientific journals. Three main issues are discussed in the paper: (1) the role of publishing non-English journals in the social sciences, (2) the relationship between paper-based and electronic publishing, and (3) the mission and the conditions of publishing open access journals.
