Mária Réthy : Attributions of arts and literature students concerning their examination results

This study gives an overview of research results on causal attribution and explains the educational use of these results. It describes an empirical study based on interviews of university students about their attributions of examination results. The analysis of subgroups constructed according to the area of study, sex and satisfaction with examination results and concludes that students explain their results mostly with inner attributes (interest, intelligence, performance motivation). Students enrolled in day courses consider chance (good or bad luck) more important than evening course students. Women are more inclined to attribute a greater role to chance and examiner attitudes towards the examine. Those satisfied with their examination results consider appropriate teaching methods more important than those dissatisfied.
