László Kojanitz: The analytical study of educational texts: Vocabulary

Within the field of textbook research, textbook analysis constitutes an independent research issue, turning qualitative aspects of textbooks into quantitative data, governed by pre-set rules. This paper gives an overview of the objectives, aspects and methods of the vocabulary analysis of instructional texts as well as the international and Hungarian results that may prove useful when designing such studies. The focus is on analytical research and methods regarding comprehensibility and learnability problems. Also discussed are those measurable text features that former research has proven to have the highest impact on students' reading comprehension and learning. A good instructional text, however, must be interesting as well as comprehendible. Therefore studies examining textbook vocabulary with regard to the potential to rouse and maintain student interest will also be introduced.
