Vilmos Vass: The Curriculum Development Projects of the National Council of Public Education in the 19th Century

The article discusses the operation of the NCPE, an indispensable institution of educational administration in 19th century Hungary. The establishment of NCPE in 1872, with Mihály Horváth as its first director, was one of the consequences in the field of education of the economic development and social changes growing stronger since 1867. Having overcome the difficulties of the first two years, the NCPE succeeded in creating the conditions for the efficient management of curriculum projects and gradually achieved a high status in Hungarian education. Based on the original minutes of its meetings, the article introduces the NCPE system for developing national, and reviewing local, curricula and also discusses its negotiations with the Ministry of Culture. The author traces the history of the reorganizations of the NCPE aiming at satisfying a rapidly increasing demand to its major restructuring in 1891.
