László Kinyó : The actor in the academic life of Szeged and in the development of Franz Joseph University

Janos Csengery had mostly been known in Hungarian academic life as a classical philologist and literary translator. His work as university president and his social role has largely been unknown, because authors in the field of local history regarding the town of Szeged and Franz Joseph University, relocated to Szeged after World War I, did not regard him an outstanding figure, though the period of his presidency, 1924-25 is pivotal in the continuation and development of the university. This study presents an analysis of archival sources and the contemporary press to reveal new data and findings in this field. Csengery’s contribution as a university leader is prominent in the following areas: (1) securing state-owned buildings for the institution; (2) taking the construction of new buildings from the first phases of planning to decision-making; (3) achieving the governments’ agreement to the framework of the construction works as jointly proposed by the university and the town. His statements and public lectures testify that he was committed to making academic achievements familiar outside the university as well.
