Kata Csizér, Zoltán Dörnyei and Nóra Németh: Changes in Language Attitudes and Motivation to Learn Foreign Languages in Hungary, 1993–2004

This study presents results from research on motivation in foreign language learning. In three separate data collection phases between 1993 and 2004, subjects (13–14-year-old students, N=13391) were administered a questionnaire to map the changes regarding language attitudes and motivated learning behaviour. The most important attitudinal and motivational factors were identified, as well as their impact on motivated learning behaviour. Results illustrate the process of linguistic globalisation, i.e. regionally important foreign languages are eclipsed by English. Of the variables examined, Integrativity (attraction to the given language and culture) proved the most important.
