Edit Katalin Molnár: Three Molels of do the Composing Process in Cognutive Psychology

Most disciplines investigating the features of texts focus on exploring the text as product, thus they do not directly address the processes of text production which result in the presence of these features. Cognitively based models of the composing process undertake this task. In contrast to the traditional conceptualization of writing as a linear activity, these models emphasize the complexity of the composing process. They see the communicative intention as the major structuring force in developing a text. The generation of ideas and the generation of a text are seen as interactive processes that can be affected by several constraints, for example the strive to produce a 'correct' surface text. In these models the satisfaction of these constraints requires an appropriate capacity for processing information and the ability to integrate a number of skills into text production. The paper introduces three such classic models, developed in the United States and Canada in the 1980s, including (1) the recursive model, which also draws on rhetoric, (2) the interactive model, which draws on discourse analysis and (3) the writing strategy model, which focuses on development. A comparison of the models leads to an examination of their presence in the practice of teaching writing.
